Recently, Guangdong Province’s Education Bureau posted its 2017 Pearl River Scholars list of subjects, in which 2 academic disciplines from 1 department and 1 school of SUSTech have been recently added: The Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the School of Environmental Science and Engineering. This means that faculty members from these schools are now applicable for the scholarship program. It was also announced that Assistant professor of SUSTech’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Ren Fuzeng was appointed as Young Pearl River Scholar, a significant achievement.

The Education Bureau of Guangdong Province started the implementation of the program in 1999 with the goal of boosting science education and talent cultivation within the province by attracting top international and domestic academic leaders.

In order to meet the new requirements of high-level talents in the new situation, the program was renamed as the “Project Supported by Guangdong Province Universities and Colleges Pearl River Scholar” in 2009, and new types of posts for lectures and professors were added and since 2016, the appointment of young Pearl River scholars has also been introduced. This year a total of 18 universities submitted 62 subjects to the program, and 17 professors received the Pearl River Scholar award, and 44 received the Young Pearl River Scholar award.
