Ministry of Education’s Development Center Director lectures on international academic influence of Chinese universities and “Double First-Class” initiative

 The Ministry of Education Science and Technology’s Development Center Director Li Zhimin arrived at SUSTech on November 1 to give a lecture on the national “Double First-Class” initiative and the international academic impact of Chinese universities. He was the 131st guest speaker of SUSTech’s Lecture Series, and gave his talk in the library’s 110 lecture hall to an audience composed of students and professors. The talk was presided over by SUSTech President Chen Shiyi.

Li Zhimin is the director of the Science and Technology Development Center of the Ministry of Education as well as the deputy director of the China Education and Scientific Research Computer Network Management Committee, the director of the University’s Research Management Research Institute and the chairman of the Chinese University-run Industry Association.

During the lecture, Li Zhimin discussed the policy measures, the overall progress and the development of provinces and cities and how they outlined the overall situation of dual first-class university building. He analyzed the ranking of universities in detail, and the evaluation criteria of ESI, as well as the international influence of Chinese universities and the international influence of disciplines. He said that he believes China’s higher education is still in the growth stage, and that developing into a “double first-class” construction is facing enormous pressure. Building a “Chinese characteristics, the world level,” the first-class university is still the direction of our development of higher education.

He hoped that the university will focus on the quality of personnel training, pointing out that the university’s education reform, stating that SUSTech had a great role to play in the future of Chinese higher education. At the end of the lecture, Li Zhimin said: “While we use others’ indicators to evaluate our own, we will never become first class. It is only through our own efforts, and gradually developing and forming world standards that we can become a first class university.”, causing the lecture hall to erupt in applause.

During the question and answer session, the teachers and students exchanged with Li Zhimin who took his time to answer each one.
