On May 20, General Luo Yuan, an international strategy & national security expert, delivered a guest lecture on China’s soft power and national security issues in the Asia-Pacific region. University Council Chairperson Guo Yurong hosted the lecture, and Vice President Tang Tao attended the event.

General Luo made an in-depth analysis of a quote by the Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 19th National Congress of CPC – “Both China and the world are in the midst of profound and complex changes.” With plain but illustrative language, he elaborated the political and military issues around China, including Sino-US relations, Sino-Japan tensions, the crisis on the Korean Peninsula, and territorial disputes in the waters surrounding Chinese territory.

During the Q&A Session, Professor Zhang Chuanlun from the Department of Ocean Science & Engineering asked General Luo for advice on developing ocean-related industries in China. General Luo spent time talking about the relationship between national interest and corporate development of China’s maritime industries, as well as the importance of youth for China’s future.

With his final comments, General Luo Yuan encouraged SUSTech students with the following three Chinese proverbs:

“When there is a will, there is a way.”

“There will always be a use for your talent.”

“God helps those who help themselves, and diligence is the means by which one makes up for one’s dullness.”
