Building Qualitative Models of Spatio-Temporal Behaviour

Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) was honored to have University of Leeds Professor Anthony G Cohn give the 190thlecture in the SUSTech Lecture Series earlier this week. SUSTech Department Head of Computer Science and Engineering Yao Xin presided over Prof. Cohn’s lecture, entitled “Building Qualitative Models of Spatio-Temporal Behaviour.”

Anthony G Cohn is a professor at the School of Computer Science at the University of Leeds, England. He was the editor-in-chief of the AI journal and is currently the editor-in-chief of the journal Spatial Cognition and Computing. He has received the Outstanding Service Award from the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence and the Outstanding Service Award from the American Artificial Intelligence Association.

In his lecture, Prof. Cohn introduced his research work at the University of Leeds. Their current research is on the use of supervised and unsupervised learning techniques to model activities in video and other sensors. He proposed the establishment of a relatively highly abstract symbol model and the conversion of sensor data into qualitative relationships. This is a new approach and method for interpreting training data.

Anthony G Cohn’s wonderful report inspired many teachers and students. Prof. Cohn answered the questions raised by the audience, further elaborating on his own unique insights.
