Famous film director Xie Fei was invited to Southern University of Science and Technology to be the 200^th speaker of the SUSTech Lecture Series. He brought a special lecture to our campus called “Letter from Home” to the faculty members and students of SUSTech, and Director Chen Yuehong of the SUSTech Humanities Center hosted the lecture.

Xie Fei graduated from the Beijing Film Academy. His best works include “Our Fields” (1983), “A Girl from Hunan” (1986), “Black Snow” (1990) and “Woman Sesame Oil Maker” (1993).

He won the Best Feature Film Award at the 13^th Film Hundred Flower Award and the Silver Bear Award at the 40^th Berlin International Film Festival in 1990 for “Black Snow.” He also won the Golden Bear Award at the 43^rd Berlin Film Festival in 1993 for “Woman Sesame Oil Maker.” He is a council member of the China Film Association and a director of the China Film Critics Association.

Xie Fei opened up about his father’s life experience. He highlighted the spirit of excellence of those that are not afraid of hardship who are prepared to serve the people and are indifferent to fame and fortune. Xie Fei pointed out that in family education, the father’s role is to pay attention to the words and deeds of his children, to ensure that his children are learning correctly.

Xie Fei told the audience that they should not only pay attention to their own profession but maintain a healthy respect and love for their own language. In his letters to his father and family, he spoke openly about his family life, as well as the history and culture of the time.

He used his “Letter from Home” to truly understand his past, to show that the best way to understand the older generation is to pay attention to their past. Xie Fei explained to the audience that they should be useful members of society and the gap between generations is not as vast as believed.

Xie Fei had the audience enthralled with his every word. He presented his “home book” and DVDs of his movies to SUSTech’s Lynn Library.
