Earlier this week, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) reviewed its 2018 undergraduate admissions and started its 2019 undergraduate admissions training. SUSTech University Council Chairperson Guo Yurong, SUSTech President Chen Shiyi, Vice President Tang Tao, Secretary-General Chen Siqi attended the event with other senior leaders across SUSTech. University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang chaired the meeting.

Guo Yurong spoke about the continued improvements to SUSTech’s admissions, and the new progress made in 2018. She thanked everyone that took part in the 2018 admissions process. The achievements of 2018 were pointed out, including obtaining the right to issue masters and doctorate degrees, as well as being selected as a key university in Guangdong Province. Guo Yurong used these as examples of SUSTech’s bright performance among top universities around the world and continues to give SUSTech further credibility. It lays a solid foundation for SUSTech to build in for its 2019 admissions work.

Guo Yurong emphasized SUSTech’s role as an institution that attracts high-level talents to Shenzhen. Thus, the admissions work cannot be taken lightly, and SUSTech must continue to work hard in providing a stable admissions environment. She said that next year’s admissions work must build on the work and achievements of previous years. By working hard together, the admissions team can remain united and take the initiative to tackle any problems that come their way. This would be the best way to improve the quality of admissions work for 2019 and for years to come.

Chen Shiyi sought to get the best students in the world, and that the development of SUSTech needs the best of the best. As part of the admissions efforts, SUSTech’s advantages and unique characteristics must be highlighted. The 6+3+1 comprehensive evaluation system of admissions is a strong advertisement for SUSTech, and Chen Shiyi attached great importance to the “3” of the “6+3+1” system.

He also put forward some requirements for the year ahead. Firstly, continue to work hard in separating fact from fiction, adapt to the local conditions and remain flexible. Secondly, make sure each province’s group members are organized in the best possible way, and make sure that nostalgia is properly accounted for. Thirdly, ensure that each group members strengths provide a foundation for admissions work.

Tang Tao then commended 22 groups and 130 individuals for their efforts in the 2018 admissions session. Senior leaders such as Guo Yurong, Chen Shiyi, Li Fengliang, and Tang Tao presented the awards to the winners.

After the awards, three SUSTech faculty members presented their experiences in admissions work. He Jiaqing, Wang Dejun, and Luo Dan also put forward new and innovative ideas for this work. Director Zhao Hongjun of the Office of Admissions gave a brief history of SUSTech’s admissions history and briefed the audience about the plans for 2019.
