Earlier this week, Southern University of Science and Technology (Series) welcomed Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Academician Professor Ouyang Zhongcan to campus to give the 238th lecture in the SUSTech Lecture Series. His speech, entitled “Scientific research integrity and the way to study – write scientific papers for the country’s development,” saw many students and faculty members attend his lecture that was hosted by Department of Physics Professor Zhang Wenqing.

Professor Ouyang Zhongcan is a theoretical physicist, researcher of the Institute of Theoretical Physics (CAS), director of the Strategic Development Committee, Dean of the Department of Physics of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), deputy director of the CAS research ethics committee, editor in chief of Chinese Physics B and Journal of physics, and the first doctor of science of Tsinghua University. He is mainly engaged in the field of physics, chemistry and biology, and has made great contributions in the research of condensed matter physics, including the theory of biomembrane liquid crystal model, liquid crystal physics, DNA macromolecular elasticity, protein folding and application basic theory.

In his lecture, Professor Ouyang Zhongcan said that truly outstanding academic achievements do not have to be published in mainstream journals, including those triumphs that have go on to win Nobel Prizes. For example, the 2008 Nobel Laureates in Physics published their research in the Journal of Progress in Theoretical Physics. He quoted 2018 Nobel Laureate, who said that “when the CNS refuses your paper, you may have written first-class research.”

Professor Ouyang Zhongcan pointed out that the first paper to win the Nobel Prize in any scientific discipline for mainland China was published in a Chinese journal. He called on overseas Chinese researchers to come back to China and publish scientific research in Chinese journals. Professor Ouyang Zhongcan encouraged Chinese researchers to apply their scientific and technological achievements to the strategic development of China, in order to give confidence to the wider academic community in mainland China.
