On November 20, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) welcomed two luminaries of materials science in China. Tsinghua University School of Materials Science and Engineering Dean Prof. Lin Yuanhua gave the third MSE lecture. He was followed by Wuhan University of Technology School of Materials Science and Engineering Dean Mai Liqiang, who gave the fourth lecture. The two lectures were chaired by MSE Deputy Head Wang Hong.
Prof. Lin Yuanhua talked about his team’s research work, which is seeking to improve the energy density and storage efficiency of dielectric films. Their work saw them design a three-phase solid solution composite film and introduce it into the cubic phase. It gave the thin films high energy storage density and high discharged energy efficiency.
Prof. Mai Liqiang spoke about the research his team is doing on one-dimensional nanowire materials in energy. From the research results, they have established a direct relationship between the electron/ion transport, nanowire structure & the charge/discharge state of the electrodes. Meantime, they have examined the kinetic characteristics of the oxygen escape reaction (OER).
Both professors shared cutting-edge research ideas and their experience in related fields. They were peppered with questions from faculty members and students at the end of their respective lectures, reflecting the enthusiasm of the MSE community at SUSTech.
