Middle School Winter Camp for Med School is massive success

As part of the 2019 “2019 Excellent Middle School Students STEM Innovation Experience Camp,” the School of Medicine at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) selected 37 outstanding students to take part in the School of Medicine Winter Camp. It took place on November 23 in the Central Morphology Laboratory.

The students first visited the anatomical, virtual reality (VR) and micro-digital interactive teaching laboratories of the Morphology Center. Professor Zhang Wenyong welcomed the students and introduced the SUSTech School of Medicine to them, within the framework of modern medicine. He encouraged them to apply to SUSTech when completing their university selections.

Students then started using the state-of-the-art equipment in the Morphology Center to identify tumor cells in microscopic pathological sections. Students were able to understand the definition of tumors as well as the distinction between benign and malignant tumors. They also learned the properties of tumor metastasis and how to identify the pathology of different types of cancers. The environment was representative of a typical SUSTech School of Medicine class.

The supervising teachers held a tumor cell recognition competition, encouraging the students to conduct scientific experiments and find R-S cells of Hodgkin’s lymphoma through the microscope. The most efficient students received small commemorative gifts.

At the end of the camp, the students took advantage of the School of Medicine’s VR equipment.

The entire day was stimulating for the students, with many of them talking to the faculty members to find out more about the School of Medicine.
