SUSTech welcomes new Department of Finance Head

On December 25, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) welcomed a new leader for the Department of Finance. The announcement was attended by SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang, Human Resources Director Chen Zhifeng, School of Business Dean Huang Wei, and all the faculty members of the Department of Finance.

Human Resources Director Chen Zhifeng announced the appointment of Wang Shuxun as the new head of the Department of Finance for a three-year term.

SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang congratulated Wang Shuxun on his appointment and thanked their former department heads for their efforts. He acknowledged the extensive academic and industry experience and hoped that Wang Shuxun would be a capable decision-maker for the Department of Finance as it develops in the coming years.

School of Business Dean Huang Wei said that the School of Business would, as always, support the Department of Finance. He hoped that Wang Shuxun would be an excellent communicator and take advantage of the numerous opportunities that have arisen throughout Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area for the development of the Department of Finance & the School of Business.

In making his maiden speech, Wang Shuxun thanked SUSTech and the School of Business for putting their trust in him. He understands the great responsibility that he must now burden, and he will bear this with solemnity. Wang Shuxun aims to lead the Department of Finance to cultivate innovative financial talents with a global vision as they strive to be a world-class Department of Finance, rooted in China. They will continue to promote the full integration of science, technology, medicine, and commerce to build an international finance department that contributes to the building of a world-class research university in SUSTech.

Who is Wang Shuxun?

Shaun Wang Shuxun is a Chair Professor for the Department of Finance at SUSTech. His previous posts have included the Nanyang Business School at Nanyang Technological University, Deputy Secretary-General and Head of Research at the Geneva Association, Chairman of Risk Lighthouse LLC, Professor and Thomas P. Bowles Endowed Chair of the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, and Research Director of SCOR Reinsurance Co.

He has published more than 37 papers in top academic journals, including Science, Journal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Pacific Rim Magazine, International Actuarial Journal, Journal of Risk and Insurance, and Insurance: Mathematics and Economics. In 2018, he was the recipient of the 2018 University of Kentucky Research Excellence Award. The American Risk and Insurance Association awarded him the 2010 Robert Mehr Award, for the paper published in the Journal of Risk and Insurance ten years ago that best stood the test of time.

Wang Shuxun holds two US patents and one temporary patent. The two US patents are for a mathematical formula called “Wang Transform,” which prices risk for fields such as catastrophe insurance, credit risk, and weather-derived products. He was the co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of the International Actuarial Association between 2005 and 2008.
