On May 27, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) hosted the launched meeting of the “Research and Development and Industrialization of Solid-State Power Battery Systems” Project (Key-Area Research and Development Program of Guangdong Province). It is a major provincial project for new energy vehicles, and the launch meeting was attended by many key figures from government, universities, companies, and SUSTech.

Experts attending the meeting included SUSTech College of Engineering Dean Zhenghe XU, Chinese Academy of Engineering Academician Liquan CHEN and Chinese Academy of Sciences Academician Huiming CHENG

Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Associate Professor Yonghong DENG went into detail about the project, in her position as the project leader. She spoke about the role of Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology Co., LTD, Shenzhen BYD Lithium Battery Co., LTD, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Shanghai Institutes of Ceramics (Chinese Academy of Sciences), and Central South University.

All the experts and attendees affirmed the research plan, organization, and management methods. They provided essential insights into the implementation of the project.

The project will seek to develop a safe, stable, and high-specific-energy solid-state battery system for vehicles. It is aiming to initially develop a system that generates an energy density of 350Wh/kg. At its core, their fundamental applications seek to generate an energy density of less than 260Wh/kg over a charge/discharge cycle of more than 1000 cycles. Such an achievement would promote the international competitiveness of new energy automobiles in Guangdong Province. The new generation of purely electric vehicles made here would be extremely safe and have a very long battery life.

Acting Vice President Yusheng ZHAO spoke about the project, in conjunction with SUSTech’s readiness to host the project and research team. It would bring many social and economic benefits to the province and the region through its numerous applications while promoting high technology and the overall competitiveness of Guangdong Province.

Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology inspector Mutang ZHOU added that the Provincial Research Project is of considerable significance in terms of industry-university research. He hoped that SUSTech would support the project through its promotion and contributions to improving the competitiveness of the solid-state battery industry.
