Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has achieved another prominent milestone on its path to be a top global university and at the same time, one of the leading universities in China. On June 10th, it was ranked the 14th best university in mainland China and 323rd in the world by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a global higher education research company and publisher of QS World University Rankings.
This new confirmation of the university’s meteoric rise to academic excellence – within 10 years of its establishment – comes only days after Times Higher Education (THE) ranked SUSTech 8th in mainland China and 33rd best university in Asia in their recent Asia University Rankings 2020.
Included in the global ranking of QS World University Rankings for the first time, SUSTech was able to propel itself in its debut year into the top 30% of the universities ranked by QS – which comprises 1002 institutions from 93 countries across the globe and 51 Chinese universities, according to QS World University Rankings 2021.
While SUSTech had excellent scores across all six ranking metrics – academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), faculty-student ratio (20%), citations per faculty (20%), international faculty (5%), and international students (5%) –, its dual ambition to be a preeminent research institution and a university of outstanding teaching pedagogy received highest recognition. In the category “faculty-student ratio”, SUSTech even rose to the top position in mainland China and 58th globally, with an almost ideal score of 96.7 points.
