On August 27, over two thousand new undergraduate and postgraduate students stepped foot into Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) for the first time. These innovative young men and women have started to write a new chapter in their lives. They are also contributing to a new page in the history of SUSTech.
The campus was full of laughter at the various service locations that sought to run a speedy registration procedure. The residential college staff, student volunteers, and departmental officials were highly supportive of each other as all the new students were ushered professionally through the various procedures.
Three student dormitories and Taizhou Hall were used as registration points to disperse students across campus under practical epidemic prevention and control methods. All registration sites were prepared with medical kits and disposable water.
In 2020, SUSTech admitted 1097 undergraduates and 1475 postgraduates. The quality of new undergraduate students continues to improve every year, with the top 1000 college entrance examination scores of outstanding candidates have increased significantly compared with last year. SUSTech admitted 920 graduate students and 555 doctoral students. Our fresh graduate students come from more than 300 top universities and research institutes at home and abroad.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, 34 international students (including undergraduates and postgraduates) from countries like Portugal, Vietnam, and Malaysia have been unable to register with SUSTech today. We look forward to seeing them join the SUSTech community as soon as possible.
Throughout the morning, University Council Chairperson Yurong GUO and President Shiyi CHEN were among the many leaders who attended Orientation Day. Both President Shiyi CHEN and Chairperson Yurong GUO visited the registration points and took photos with students & parents. They thanked all the staff for running a successful Orientation Day while also chatting with the new students.
SUSTech has supported 65% of the Class 2024 students with scholarships. Throughout their time at SUSTech, students will have access to grants, rewards, scholarships, and bursaries to encourage their academic and research goals. Students will also have the opportunity to travel overseas on exchanges to universities and research institutes.
The SUSTech Student Union worked with other volunteer groups to provide many students to help in various capacities around campus and even from the subway to campus. Their presence could be felt throughout the day, from the first interaction to the last. The entire SUSTech community praised them for their selfless efforts throughout the day.
Each student received unique gifts from their residential college that would assist them in their first few weeks at SUSTech. The gifts included canvas bags, T-shirts, umbrellas, water cups, cardholders, mosquito nets to avoid mosquito bites, and laundry detergent.
