On November 6 and 7, SUSTech Annual Research Symposium 2020 was held in Runyang Stadium. Vice Chief Executive of Nanshan District Cong LIAN and Director from Ministry of Science and Technology Wei ZHAO were invited to attend. Vice President Dongxiao ZHANG and Acting Vice President Yusheng Zhao hosted the Symposium. They were joined by SUSTech University Council Chairperson Yurong GUO, President Shiyi CHEN, University Council Vice Chairperson Fengliang LI, senior officials, scholars, researchers across the campus, and representatives from the government departments across Guangdong Province.
The Symposium was held to conclude the progress and achievements SUSTech has made in scientific research in 2020 and promote SUSTech’s scientific research work to a new height.
The first day saw reports from the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the School of Medicine, the College of Business, Technology Transfer Center, Office of Laboratory & Equipment Management, and Affiliated Hospitals. Each leader provided an extensive briefing about the research being conducted in their respective institutions and their future plans.
Chairperson GUO affirmed the scientific research outputs of SUSTech in its short history and highlighted the contribution SUSTech has made in the epidemic control with science and technology. She said that the requirements for researchers have been upgrading in such a complex international situation and emphasized that all the faculty members should bear the mission of scientific research in mind and get more achievements. The University should continue to vigorously develop basic and applied research, integrate existing valuable resources, and cooperate with other universities to promote our scientific research work to a new level.
President CHEN said SUSTech needs to conclude its scientific research work on the occasion of the 10th anniversary and further enhance the University’s influence and scientific research strength. With world-class talents gathering here, SUSTech has the responsibility to pursue Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship and higher quality research output to build SUSTech into a world-class research university and contribute to the construction of Shenzhen and our nation.
On the second day, Wei ZHAO delivered a speech on the management work of the Ministry of Science and Technology from the perspective of scientific research integrity. He was then followed by reports from another four colleges and institutions, including the SUSTech Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, Shenzhen Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
In the afternoon, attendees were split into four different subforums. The topics discussed include the integration of University research into the national development strategy, scientific research to help “double first-class” construction and create a national major strategic advantage discipline group, multi-disciplinary thinking, and path of world-class universities of science and engineering, basic and applied research for mores breakthroughs, top-level scientific research platforms, projects and teams, and scientific research management techniques and maintaining the integrity of scientific research. All faculty members gave their suggestions in the discussion.
Acting Vice President Yusheng ZHAO made a concluding speech. He pointed out that the Symposium saw a comprehensive summary of SUSTech’s latest scientific research progress and discussions on key issues of scientific research management, major projects, and interdisciplinary work of the University, preparing SUSTech for the next step in scientific research work. SUSTech should always actively promote the construction of key disciplines, strive to improve its scientific research, contributing to the construction of an innovative country.
