On February 27, two undergraduate students from the School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing (SDIM) at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Quan ZHOU and Yajing LI, alongside visiting student Jiaxi ZHAO, under the mentorship of Xiaochen ZHENG, Assistant Professor at SDIM, collaborated with students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) to win the third prize in the algorithm competition at the 3rd Industrial Digital Twin Contest (IDTC 2023).
Their awarded work, entitled “Evaluation of Thermomechanical Properties and Directed Multimechanistic Analysis Through Signal Processing: A Time Series Analysis Approach Using Kurtosis and Negative Entropy for Health Index Formulation”, showcased a culmination of meticulous preparation and interdisciplinary understanding.
Quan ZHOU and Yajing LI, part of the fourth cohort of students trained under SDIM’s new engineering education model, employed design thinking methodologies throughout the preparatory phase, leveraging multidisciplinary knowledge insights in mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, and computer science to prepare for the competition.
The team balanced theoretical research with hands-on application, subjecting their findings to rigorous testing and validation through repeated experimentation.
Confronted with complex challenges and intense competition, the team exhibited tenacious dedication by continuously refining and optimizing their algorithm to yield excellent results.
The IDTC, jointly sponsored by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and the Wuhu Municipal People’s Government, and hosted by the Wuhu Economic and Information Technology Bureau, drew 1,832 contestants forming 769 teams, resulting in a total of 459 projects submitted this year.
