Hong CHEN, Associate Professor of the School of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), has been awarded the 2025 American Chemical Society (ACS) Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering Lectureship Award. He is the only recipient from the Asia-Pacific region this year.

Jointly established by the ACS Green Chemistry Institute and the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, the Lectureship Award recognizes leading scientists from around the world who have made groundbreaking contributions to the field of environmental and sustainable chemistry. Each year, one recipient is selected from the three major global regions.

Hong CHEN was recognized for his innovative application of clean technologies, notably electrochemical and photochemically driven processes to address pollution control and circular processing of technical materials.

His research team is advancing clean energy-powered solutions for resource recycling and pollution mitigation, building a full-chain innovation model spanning principles, materials, devices, and systems. Their work offers low-carbon, green, and circular solutions for the sustainable recovery of critical elements from “urban mines” and other industrial materials—an approach that has been cited in an editorial by ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering as a key reference case.

This award underscores SUSTech’s growing global influence in sustainable technologies for environmental pollution control and resource recycling, contributing to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as a global leader in green innovation.

Hong CHEN has also been invited to attend the 29th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference, taking place in Pittsburgh, USA, in June 2025, where he will receive the award and deliver a keynote lecture. His research will be featured across the ACS’s global communication platforms, reaching audiences in more than 150 countries.
