UNESCO Experts visit Shenzhen and carry out feasibility study on the establishment of the Center for Innovation in Higher Education in SUSTC

On June 19th, 2015, MS. Wu Yi Huan, the vice Mayor of Shenzhen, met with a panel of experts from UNESCO, which included Professor Wang Li Bing, the commissioner of higher education of UNESCO Office in Bangkok, Mr. Danilo Padilla, Liaison Officer of UNESCO UNESCO Office in Bangkok and Mr.Roger Yap Chao Jr, the senior expert. Both sides exchanged views on the establishment of International Center for Innovation in Higher Education in Shenzhen. The center will be located in South University Of Science And Technology Of China (SUSTC). Ms. Guo Yu Rong, Director of the Education Bureau of Shenzhen, Mr. Li Ming, Secretary of the CPC Committee of SUSTC, Ms. Han Wei, Deputy Director of Preparation Office and heads from related departments attended the above activity.

Shenzhen municipal government plans to build the International Center for Innovation in Higher Education in SUSTC based on the memorandum and trust fund framework agreement, signed on June 2014 and May 2015 by both sides.

The team of experts will carry out the feasibility study in Shenzhen depending on the application procedures. In the next four days, the experts will gather the updates on the application work report and visit the academic institution and campus environment of SUSTC and world famous local high-tech enterprises and small and medium innovative enterprises.

“Shenzhen municipal government pays close attention to the preparations of the International Center for Innovation in Higher Education, which is a primary focus of the mayor Mr. Xu Qin’s 2015 report on government work,” Ms. Wu Yi Huan, Shenzhen vice mayor, said during the meeting with the experts team from UNESCO.

Professor Wang Li Bing, Mr. Danilo Padilla and Mr.Roger Yap Chao Jr, appreciate the warm welcome that they have received in Shenzhen and SUSTC. 

“Shenzhen is an important city in China for her spirit of innovation and internationalization, which match the characteristics of the center. SUSTC is a university based on the city’s reforms and innovation, which is an example of education innovation in China. The experts team will take a hard look and collect the comprehensive statistics and objective materials for the report back to the head office,” said Professor Wang Li Bing.

“Established by the Municipality of Shenzhen, SUSTC is a top-tier university that excels in research and the cultivation of innovative talent, which is a publicly funded university in the Guangdong Province. SUSTC has the competence to build the center and take on the responsibilities for the world’s development of higher education,” said Mr. Li Ming, Secretary of the CPC Committee of SUSTC.

The International Center for Innovation in Higher Education strive to become the international platform in the reform of education based on the memorandum and trust fund framework agreement, signed on by both sides. It plans to assimilate the best practices of the top universities in the developed countries and shows a range of successful experiences in the spanning development of China’s higher education.

As the experimental field of China’s higher education reform, SUSTC will fuel the city’s development through the education innovation, the pooling of experts and international dialogues. SUSTC is striving to position China’s higher education on the world stage.
