The Cadre Conference Scene

President Chen Shiyi is making a speech.

In the afternoon of January 21, 2015,SUSTC (South University of Science And Technology Of China) held the Cadre Conference and announced the decision about the appointment of the new president of SUSTC. According to the comment of Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee, Guangzhou Provincial Party Committee decided that Chen Shiyi took the post of the president of SUSTC. Many officers are present at the conference：Wang Rong-member of the standing committee of Guangdong province and municipal party secretary; Zhang Hui-vice minister of organization department of Guangdong provincial party committee; Jing Lihu-deputy secretary of Education Committee of Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and deputy party secretary of Provincial Education Department; Chen Wenming-officer in deputy department director of Organization Department of Guangdong Province; Zhang Hu-the member of Standing Committee of Shenzhen City and the minister of organization department. Li Ming, the secretary of the party committee of SUSTC， chaired the meeting.

Chen Shiyi, the new president of SUSTC, is a Doctor of Science of Peking University, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and honored as National Distinguished Specialist. From 1987 to 2005, Prof. Chen studied and worked in the USA, during the time, he acted as the director of the turbulence and lattice research group of Los Alamos National Laboratory in USA, the deputy director of CNLS of Los Alamos National Laboratory, permanent professor of department of mechanical engineering of JHU and chairman of department mechanical engineering of JHU. In 2005, he came back to Peking University, and set up Engineering College of Peking University. He was appointed as the dean of graduate school of Peking University and vice chancellor of Peking University successively.

During the meeting, Wang Rong pointed that SUSTC had got outstanding achievements in setting up Chinese characteristic modern university system, cultivating top innovative talents and other aspects in recent five years. The founding president, academician Zhu Qingshi had made a great contribution on the preparations, construction and development of SUSTC. He believed SUSTC will get further pioneering development once Mr. Chen took post of the president of SUSTC. The university will be enhanced to a more new and higher level.

Wang Rong addressed four hopes about SUSTC in future: First, SUSTC must make more performance in exploring and building modern university system with Chinese characters, and strive for being the model of high-education reformatory. Second, the SUSTC should strive for improving the teaching system and making breakthrough by embracing the innovative talent cultivation. Third, the disciplinary planning of the SUSTC need stare at the general trend of modern industrial development. And the university should make plans in new disciplinary development and let the discipline structure and scientific research of the SUSTC match with the era development. Four, the SUSTC need gather more global top talents and build a high and international teaching body.

Zhang Hui made a speech on behalf of the Provincial Organization Department. He pointed that Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee attach great importance to the building of SUSTC leading body. The Guangdong provincial party committee thought that Chen Shiyi is competent to  the president of SUSTC. And he put forward four opinions about the building of leading body of the SUSTC: first, deepen the reform continually; second, implement the headmaster-in-charge system under the leading of the party committee; third, make great efforts to solidarity and cooperation, do the work and make performance together; four, improve the style of work continually.

Jing Lihu represented the education working committee of provincial party committee to make a speech. He points that ministry of education; provincial party committee provincial government and Shenzhen municipal party committee and government still paid high attention to the development of the SUSTC. We believed that Chen Shiyi will make pioneering development to the university career after taking post of president and make all kinds of work of school to a higher and new level.

Li Ming represented the school leadership body to make a speech. He showed that he is determined to support the decision of provincial and municipal party committee, and gave a warm welcome to Chen Shiyi for assuming the president. He pointed that Chen Shiyi not only has got high attainments academically, but also has rich experience of leading positions on colleges and universities, and he will improve the teaching, scientific research, social work and other aspects of the SUSTC to a new level. Li Ming represented all the teachers and students to thank for the school offering this high-level president. He also pointed that, the SUSTC undertook the mission of reform and innovation of colleges and universities which should lead all the teachers to deepen the reform and innovation of the SUSTC according to the requirements of provincial party committee, municipal party committee and council.

The new president Chen Shiyi made a speech. He said: “From now on, I am one of the SUSTC. I will throw myself into the development and building of the SUSTC with all of you. I will share her honor and achievement and take on her future and obligation.” President Chen Shiyi represented that he chose the SUSTC because he dreamed to found new-style world-class university and cultivate innovation-type talents with high ability and professional integrity. He also said Shenzhen City is a young city with young blood and reform passionate which motivate his enthusiasm for founding world-class universities in China. The orientation and idea of SUSTC known by reform deeply attract him, so he made a determination to join the SUSTC. So he said: “I am very honored and proud to join the SUSTC for exploring the reform of higher education in China.

President Chen Shiyi put forward five ideas for running the university: first, insist on the SUSTC as the test field of reform of higher reform, synchronize the reform and establishment, development and innovation work together; second, further build and perfect the modern university system of the SUSTC, go on building the modern university system with run a school by law, self-management, teaching and doing scholarly research, democratic supervision and social participation, then build the university management system which oriented by academic; third, the management of the SUSTC should be rooted in the innovation-type, diversified and international Shenzhen City, and oriented by “international standard, leading-edge subject, innovation and entrepreneurship” to form distinct features; four, converge classic teachers and students, insist on the synchronized advance of undergraduate, master and doctor education, and promote the cooperative management of university with famous universities at home and abroad. In the same time, we should cultivate university spirit of the SUSTC, build relax and free academic environment, set up good academic atmosphere with diligent and conscientious scholarship, build homeland with triune internationalization of “master, building, university spirit” and humanistic spirit, and aim for being the south center of China of global teaching and scientific research; five, abide by the school rules, come down to earth and put our back into this work.

President Chen Shiyi Profile:

Chen Shiyi, male, Han Nationality, was born in October, 1956 in Tiantai, Zhejiang Province. He started to work in July, 1987, the Doctor of Science, Ph.D. Adviser, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and honored as the National Distinguished Specialist. He was the Vice Chancellor of Peking University, Dean of Graduate School.
