SUSTech’s Xumu ZHANG elected as foreign member of Russian Academy of Engineering

On April 21, 2022, Xumu ZHANG, Vice Dean of the College of Science and Chair Professor of the Department of Chemistry at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), was elected as a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Engineering (RAE).

Boris Vladimirovich Gusev, President of the RAE, congratulated Prof. ZHANG on his selection and hopes he can make significant contributions to promote scientific and technological cooperation and development between China and Russia.

Prof. Xumu ZHANG is also the Head of the Medi-X Pingshan. He is a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and the Shenzhen Overseas High-Level Peacock Program: Category A Talents.

He is mainly engaged in the research of organometallic chemistry and coordination compounds. He is an expert in the fields of basic research and industrial application of phosphorus chemistry. He has published more than 400 papers and was the first scientist from mainland China to receive the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society in 2002.

The Zhang enyne cycloisomerization, a named reaction developed by Prof. ZHANG, is crowned with his last name because of its importance. At present, less than five Chinese scientists in the world have this honor.

Established in 1990, the Russian Academy of Engineering is the successor of the Engineering Academy of the USSR. It is a cross-industry scientific institution jointly founded by 20 ministries and departments. At present, it has more than 1,500 members, including 100 foreign members.
