Liyang SHAO, Vice Dean of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Research Fellow of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), was recently elected as a corresponding member of the National Academy of Artificial Intelligence (NAAI). This honor recognizes his outstanding contributions to the integration of intelligent sensing and artificial intelligence (AI).

Liyang SHAO has long focused on advancing AI-powered distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) systems. His team has made significant strides in areas such as signal processing, event recognition, and real-world implementation.

They developed an intelligent sensing system architecture that integrates AI algorithms and conducted innovative research in multiple key areas. By leveraging deep learning and other technologies, they improved signal quality and robustness; enabled efficient recognition of diverse events through AI models; addressed data scarcity challenges using physics-constrained generative adversarial networks; and optimized data transmission through lightweight modeling.

These efforts have resulted in the development of a high-efficiency, intelligent DAS platform that incorporates multiple cutting-edge technologies. The system supports monitoring networks spanning 40 to 80 kilometers, achieving high detection accuracy with an alert precision rate exceeding 97%, and a false alarm rate below 2%.

The system has been implemented across various urban infrastructure applications in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, where it is integrated with video surveillance to significantly enhance operational efficiency.

The NAAI is dedicated to advancing AI research, promoting academic exchanges and collaboration, and enhancing the public’s understanding and awareness of AI. It brings together leading scientists and engineers who have made significant contributions to the field and plays an important role in shaping innovation through research, education, and public engagement.
