On September 11, the launch of the Broad View Salon took place at Shuli College at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).

Distinguished sculptor and Shuli College mentor Jun LV delivered a lecture where he spoke about public art and university spirit. Ling ZHANG, University Council Vice-Chairperson of SUSTech, along with heads and faculty members from various departments, attended the event.

Jun LV is a leading figure in the Chinese sculpture community, serving as Vice President and Executive Director of the Association of Asian Contemporary Sculptors (China). Based in Shenzhen, his works include the “Baby” and “Bloom” series, as well as “Jinggang Red Flag” (2007), which, together with “Bloom 1” (2008), won national awards for urban sculpture. He has also donated the original “Jinggang Red Flag” model to SUSTech.

In his remarks, Vice-Chairperson Ling ZHANG expressed his gratitude to Jun LV for bringing artistic inspiration to the campus and emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue between science and art. He noted that public art and university spirit are deeply connected, and that SUSTech should remain inclusive, open, and innovative. He encouraged students to draw inspiration from both science and art in their pursuit of excellence.

During the dialogue session, Jun LV and Ling ZHANG engaged with faculty members and students on the role of sculpture in shaping cultural identity and the meaning of university spirit. Drawing on his works “Jinggang Red Flag” and “Bloom 1,” Jun LV highlighted how public art embodies a university’s values, describing it as a “solidified textbook” and a “silent textbook” that connects history and future while embodying heritage and innovation.

The event also marked the launch of the SUSTech 15th Anniversary: Public Art & Creativity Workshop. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the University will collaborate with artists to establish a creative platform where faculty members and students can contribute to the design and production of public artworks for the campus.

The Broad View Salon series is a new cultural program by the SUSTech Museums, which aims to create small, high-quality exchanges that bring together prominent figures from science, culture, art, and education to broaden perspectives and inspire new ideas.
