On July 19, SUSTech representatives were invited to the Shenzhen-Brisbane Economy, Trade and Investment Forum held by Mayor of Brisbane Graham Quirk. SUSTech accepted the 2018 Shenzhen-Brisbane Sister City Scholarship at the forum from Director Julian Wilson, of the University of Queensland Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (UQ-ICTE). The scholarship deepens SUSTech-UQ partnership, reflecting the contributions of the universities to each cities’ relationship.
This year marks the 26th anniversary of the Shenzhen-Brisbane sister city relationship. UQ-ICTE set up the scholarship to celebrate the long-standing friendship and collaboration between the two cities. The scholarship entitles one nominated SUSTech student to a five-week intensive English language program at UQ-ICTE and a one-week internship at the Brisbane City Council.
The forum also presented Brisbane’s developments in a variety of areas. Specific focus was placed on tourism, infrastructure, investment promotion, the technological industry, and collaborations in higher education. Several speakers said Chinese students are the largest group of international students in Brisbane. They all stressed their significant contribution to the city’s economy.
Sponsored by Shenzhen Foundation for International Exchange and Cooperation (SFIEC), Mayor Quirk’s forum also saw Brisbane become an official active member of a major Shenzhen project called “City Plus,” to connect more cities to Shenzhen. Last year, SUSTech became an honorary council member of SFIEC.
