Nobel Laureate and Caltech professor Robert H. Grubbs led a delegation from the US National Academy of Engineering to Shenzhen, to visit the Shenzhen Grubbs Institute, where the Nobel Laureate is an honorary dean. The delegation included President of the National Academy of Engineering C. Robert Mote, and they were received by University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang.
The delegation from the US National Academy of Engineering was invited by the Grand Challenge Scholars Program (GCSP) to come to China. The GCSP started in 2008 and City University of Hong Kong worked with the University of Hong Kong to organize the GCSP Hong Kong-based International workshop. The symposium was focused on how engineering in the 21st century has expanded from simply transforming and manufacturing products, to paying more attention to humans and the earth. This shift in focus for engineering has thus seen engineering look at how it is making the world more sustainable, safer, healthier and happier.
The delegation got an introduction of the Shenzhen Grubbs Institute and discussed the development of the Institute with Professor Grubbs. Dean Daniel Motte of the US National Academy of Engineering spoke highly of the Shenzhen Grubbs Institute. He said that under the leadership of Professor Grubbs, the Institute would definitely bring new opportunities to the development of related fields.
Background:
The Shenzhen Grubbs Research Institute is fully supported by the Shenzhen Research Municipal Government. The Institute relies on both the construction and management of SUSTech. With the international influence of Professor Grubbs in the fields of catalytic and materials chemistry, the Institute attracts top Chinese and foreign scientists and teams to join in the development of a basic scientific research center. The Institute focuses on the innovative research work of the source through the construction of a small molecule catalytic center and a polymer material research center. The Institute strives to industrialize its research results in order to promote and upgrade related industries in Shenzhen.
