Affiliated Hospitals of Southern University of Science and Technology Unveiled

On the morning of October 8, 2018, the First and Second Affiliated Hospitals of Southern University of Science and Technology were successively unveiled at Shenzhen People’s Hospital and Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital.

According to the resolution of the municipal government, Shenzhen People’s Hospital is now marked as the First Affiliated Hospital of Southern University of Science and Technology, and Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital has become the Second Affiliated Hospital of Southern University of Science and Technology. They have now officially become the affiliated hospitals of Southern University of Science and Technology.

Director Luo Lexuan of the Shenzhen Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission and Deputy Director Lin Hancheng of the Shenzhen Public Hospital Management Center were joined by University Council Chairperson Guo Yurong, University President Chen Shiyi, University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang and University Vice President Lu Chun. Dean Qiu Chen of the First Affiliated Hospital of Southern University of Science and Technology and Dean Liu Lei of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Southern University of Science and Technology (Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital), were also in attendance.

This is a new starting point for Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and both the Shenzhen People’s Hospital and the Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital. Both SUSTech and the hospitals will share resources and co-operate in areas such as personnel training, subject development, team building, and scientific research. This cooperation will bring more convenient, better and higher-end medical and health services to Shenzhen residents, and promote the development of medical education and clinical research to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Mr. Luo Lexuan said that the listing of the affiliated hospitals directly under Southern University of Science and Technology shows the high-level international platform for medical and health education in Shenzhen. Mr. Luo hopes that the School of Medicine and the two affiliated hospitals of SUSTech will focus on talent training, academic discipline construction, and scientific research platforms. He is convinced that they will be the best in the field of medical education and research. They will continue to meet the urgent needs of quality medical talents in Shenzhen and enhance the ability of future medical talents in Shenzhen. Shenzhen’s work in building an international, regional health center will contribute to a healthy Shenzhen and healthy China.

Mr. Lin Hancheng said that the listing of the affiliated hospital directly under Southern University of Science and Technology marks a milestone in the cooperation between the hospital and the university in the new era.

He pointed out that Southern University of Science and Technology, along with the two affiliated hospitals, are developing from a new starting point. Both sides should make full use of each other’s superior resources in order to coordinate their respective developments. They can work together in areas such as medical treatment, teaching, and scientific research to create high-level medical schools. They can also promote the service quality of affiliated hospitals and bring more powerful medical care to the health of the 20 million people in Shenzhen. Ultimately, the Affiliated Hospitals of Southern University of Science and Technology will help achieve a healthy Shenzhen and build the grand medical goals of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

SUSTech Council Chairperson Guo Yurong and President Chen Shiyi both delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.

Guo Yurong said that the School of Medicine at SUSTech and its affiliated hospitals should play an important role in establishing a “new medical” education system, a model for training high-level talents and improving the integration of medical education and research in Shenzhen. In accordance with the standards of the world-class high-level university-affiliated hospitals, SUSTech will vertically integrate medical resources, and comprehensively enhance the hospital’s comprehensive service capabilities by taking advantage of SUSTech’s various platforms. The vertical integration will help the hospitals strive to establish the National Clinical Medical Research Center. Through the implementation of an integrated Pearl River Delta region-specific strategy, SUSTech can create a first-class, internationally advanced comprehensive Third-level grade-A hospital, integrating the functions of medical, scientific research, teaching, prevention and health care.

President Chen Shiyi believes that the two hospitals have realized the robust combination of local medical education resources in Shenzhen, providing strong support and guarantee for the successful construction of high-level medical schools, now they are directly under SUSTech.

He pointed out that SUSTech’s medical school and affiliated hospitals will focus on clinical teaching and research, which will promote a good combination of medical education and research. This approach will accelerate the process of exchange and cooperation and give full play to their respective resource advantages. As a result, Shenzhen residents will experience more convenient, better and higher-end medical and health services that share the characteristics of SUSTech and the rich resources of Shenzhen’s hospitals. The construction of medical colleges with profound knowledge will promote the rapid development of medical education and clinical research the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Deans Qiu Chen and Liu Lei said that actively integrating with SUSTech was a major milestone in the development of their respective hospitals. They would continue to fulfill the duties of the affiliated hospitals and further promote the overall level of the hospital based on the teaching and research advantages of SUSTech. The improvement has made due contributions to the medical and healthcare industry in Shenzhen.

As a university that specializes in science, engineering, and medicine, and has a business and specialties in humanities and social sciences, the development of medical school is an important measure for building the comprehensive development of the University and providing first-class medical care for urban development.

The orientation of the School of Medicine of Southern University of Science and Technology is to build a high-level international research medical school rooted in Shenzhen and integrated with science and engineering. The goal of the construction of a medical school is to explore the innovative concepts and practices of the “new medical sciences” and to lead the reform of new medical education models for training of leading health talents.

The medical school will rely on the advantages of the science and engineering disciplines of SUSTech to establish a multi-disciplinary “new medical science” development system. It will draw lessons from the international first-class medical education model, build a first-class international training base for medical talents, promote the sustainable development of medical and health undertakings, and serve Shenzhen and Guangdong. The construction of the affiliated hospitals directly under SUSTech is the vigorous support and guarantee for the internationalization, high-level and research-oriented medical school of SUSTech.

The First Affiliated Hospital of Southern University of Science and Technology (Shenzhen People’s Hospital) is the largest modern health complex in Shenzhen. It integrates medical treatment, scientific research, teaching, resident training, health care, complete functions, advanced equipment, rational talent structure, and strong technical force.
