Recently, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) held the Second Future Engineering Education Seminar. Attendees include President Chen Shiyi, Dean of Engineering College Xu Zhenghe, DJI Innovations Chairman Li Zexiang, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Professor Wu Jingshen.

President Chen emphasized that the engineering education at SUSTech is based on the science-technology orientation of the university and historical stage of the society. It is important for SUSTech to seize opportunities, strive for innovation and become a unique first-class university.

DJI Innovations Chairman Li Zexiang made a presentation called “Business Incubation, Robotics School and Cultivation of Innovative Talents.” He introduced engineering education in the era of intelligence from aspects of positioning, strategy, measures, and assessments. Li pointed out that robotics is the most representative academic and educational field regarding cutting-edge interdisciplinary engineering due to its integration of mathematics, design, mechanics, electronics and computer science.

Professor Wu talked about his work experience at HKUST School of Engineering, in a speech titled “Education Reform at HKUST – An Introduction of Division of Integrative Systems and Design.” Wu illustrated the division’s plan to carry out a new kind of engineering education background, including the background, specific measures, and future directions.

Xu Zhenghe stressed that barriers between majors, disciplines, and cultures should be all broken down to take engineering education to the next level, which is interdisciplinary, student-centered, need-based, ability-oriented, industry-oriented, world-oriented and future-oriented.

Heated discussions on engineering education reform took place throughout the seminar, which saw many measures, policies, plans, and goals put forward.
