Last week, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) hosted the inaugural meeting of the Robotic Science and Engineering Innovation Summit, along with the Appointment Ceremony of the SUSTech Institute of Robotics Advisory Committee.

The SUSTech Institute of Robotics and the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering held the Summit, with the guide of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Committee. Academician Xiong Youlun of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academician Dean Xu Zhenghe of the School of Engineering joined experts and scholars from around the world.

The forum discussed issues like the development status and trends at the cutting edge of global robotics, in order to promote the integration of cutting edge of robotics and regional economic development. Director of the SUSTech Institute of Robotics Chen I-Ming hosted the summit with Executive Director Rong Yiming.

Academician Xu Zhenghe said that SUSTech had accelerated its development into an international high-level research university and actively responded to the national robot development strategic plan. It had implemented the overall deployment of Shenzhen’s industrial robot strategy development and will strive to promote the Robotics Research Institute for Shenzhen, which would make positive contributions to the city’s intelligent manufacturing sector.

Professor Chen I-Ming comprehensively briefed the audience about the SUSTech Institute of Robotics. He covered the goals, organization, foundation, research foci and achievements of the Institute since its establishment in September 2017. It was pointed out that the Institute had closely followed SUSTech’s development and was focused on building a robotics R&D base that meets the needs of China as well as the strategic emerging industries of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

The Advisory Committee of the SUSTech Institute of Robotics was officially established on December 12, 2018. The Appointment Ceremony was held at the Summit. The Advisory Committee is made up of more than 20 members, who are academicians, professors, and entrepreneurs at home and abroad.

Keynote speeches came from academicians and professors from institutions such as Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the French Academy of Sciences, Soochow University, Seoul National University, Huazhong University of Science, and Aalto University. Entrepreneurs including the CEO of Han’s Laser Corporation, and the Chief Technology Officers of both Foxconn and UBTECH all reported on the topics of latest robot industrial technology, the updated state of the robotics industry and the trends and future of the robot industry. The reports and speeches covered the development history, opportunities and challenges faced by the industry.

The summit also held a round-table forum to discuss “Innovative Research and Industrial Applications in Robotics.” There were many questions covering a wide range of issues, that were dealt with by the experts and scholars present.

On the second day of the summit, further keynote reports saw discussion of the development status and trends of the global cutting edge of robotics, while exploring the opportunities and challenges facing the robotics field, along with future innovations and applications. The Summit also set Parallel Sessions and invites professors to share the latest research outputs in Robotics. The Summit has expanded the international and domestic influence of the SUSTech Institute of Robotics, enhanced the impact of Shenzhen robot innovation research and promoted the industrial development model supported by original innovation.
