From July 10 to July 11, Wolfson College’s President Sir Tim Hitchens and Fellow and Development Director William Conner visited SUSTech. They were welcomed by SUSTech representatives including President Chen Shiyi, Vice President Tang Tao, Dean of Sciences College Yang Xueming, Global Engagement Office Director Hou Shengtao, and Graduate School’s Associate Dean Yang Shuanghua.
After meeting with Physics Associate Professor Oscar Dahlsten on academic affairs, Hitchens and Conner visited the 3D campus construction model and listened to the campus introduction given by Professor Hou Shengtao. They then met with SUSTech representatives to engage in detailed discussions on Wolfson College, Rhodes Scholarships, quantum physics collaboration and a possible joint Ph.D. program. Hitchens and Connor embarked on a campus tour before heading to dinner.
The following day, Hitchens and Connor were taken on a lab tour at the Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering. The Wolfson College representatives met Academician Yu Dapeng and Professor He Jiaqing.
On July 10, Dr. Gregory Washington, Dean of the Henry Samuli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), visited SUSTech with Director of Academic Innovation Dr. Lily Wu. They were welcomed by President Chen Shiyi, Vice President Lu Chun, Associate Dean of Engineering College Zhang Bi and Associate Director of Global Engagement Office Li Xu.
In the morning, the two parties discussed the following topics at the meeting: possibilities of university-industry collaboration, the prospects for establishing a research center similar to what SUSTech has with MIT, and areas for future collaborations. After lunch, Drs Washington and Wu attended the second meeting with Zhang Bi and other representatives from the College of Engineering. They also met students undertaking the SUSTech-UCI “3+2” program.
