Earlier this week, the 2018 National Student Orienteering Championships were successfully hosted in Fujian Province’s Zhangzhou. Hao Wei, an undergraduate student from SUSTech, was the champion in the National College Group – SUSTech’s first national level Championship on August 23rd.

Orienteering is a sport that requires competitors to use a map and compass to reach specific points on a map in turn and do so in the shortest period of time. The sport has been around for over one hundred years and began as a sporting competition in Sweden in 1895.

The National Student Orienteering Championship is an annual event directed and sponsored by the China University Sports Association. Since the first National Student Orienteering Championships in 2002, it has been run every year since then, with this year representing the 17thoccurrence of the Championships. SUSTech’s Sports Center brought 8 students to participate in the championships and found a lot of success in the process. Lv Chenghao came third in the group C undergraduate individual short distance orienteering on August 21st; Hao Wei came first in winning the men’s individual championships on the 23rd, and Zhang Caiqi came third in the women’s individual championships. This is the first time SUSTech has won first place in these championships.
