On January 10, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) was a key figure at the launch of the 2020 ASC Student Supercomputer Competition (ASC20). SUSTech will host the finals of ASC20 from April 25 to 29, with the top 20 teams from around the world competing on campus. SUSTech Vice President Lu Chun attended the launch ceremony.
The ceremony revealed the questions for the final, which include quantum computing simulations and training AI models for English tests.
More than 300 participating teams from all over the world will attempt these questions to qualify for the final.
ASC Founder, Inspur Group Chief Scientist and Chinese Academy of Engineering Academician Wang Endong said that these questions are intended to reflect the significant changes in computing technology. ASC competitions continue to set cutting-edge questions so that competitors can consider issues appropriate to help them develop into graduates necessary for Industry 4.0 and promote technological innovation.
SUSTech Vice President Lu Chun said that supercomputers are vital pieces of infrastructure for creative scientific and economic development. SUSTech has long encouraged its undergraduates to compete in ASC competitions as part of its real-world computer science training. Hosting ASC20 will provide the opportunity for international exchanges and partnerships.
Following the speeches, Lu Chun and Wang Endong officially launched ASC20.
Background:
The ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge is the world’s largest student supercomputer competition, sponsored and organized by China and supported by Asian, European, and American experts and institutions. The main objectives of ASC are to encourage the exchange and training of young supercomputing talents from different countries, improve supercomputing applications and R&D capacity, boost the development of supercomputing, and promote technical and industrial innovation. The annual ASC Supercomputer Challenge was first held in 2012 and has since attracted over 7,000 undergraduates from all over the world. Last year, the SUSTech team won first prize, also claiming the awards for Application Innovation and Most Popular Team.
SUSTech has one of the most robust supercomputing platforms in mainland China, with two high-performance supercomputing clusters, called Qiming and Taiyi, in its Center for Comuptational Science and Engineering.
